Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into all cases of Bengal post-poll violence

Kolkata, Aug 19: In a major development, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into all the cases including of the cases related to murder, rape and crime against women which took place in West Bengal. The CBI investigation will be monitored by the High Court itself.
The bench led by Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and comprising Justices IP Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen and Subrata Talukdar ruled a court-monitored CBI probe into the incidents of post-poll violence. A separate Special Investigation Team (SIT), with senior officers from the West Bengal cadre, will be set up to probe the other allegations.

This came after a committee was set up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) who had looked into the incidents of violence following the West Bengal assembly elections and recommended a court-monitored CBI probe.

The Mamata-led government had accused the NHRC pf being biased but the High Court rejected the allegations and stated that violence had took place in May after the results were announced. It had said that there was enough evidence to prove that post-poll violence had indeed taken place.
