Lucknow | March 31, 2026:: In a development that has triggered political debate and raised questions around the limits of free speech, a Bihar-based cleric, Maulana Abdullah Salim, has been arrested for allegedly making objectionable remarks about the mother of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The arrest, carried out by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), comes in the wake of multiple FIRs and a viral video that drew widespread attention on social media.
Arrest and Police Action
According to officials, Salim was detained late Monday night from Purnea district in Bihar following coordinated action between the STF and local police units. He was subsequently transported under tight security to Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh, where he was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
Two FIRs have been registered against him—one at Kotwali Nagar police station in Bahraich and another in Balrampur district—under sections related to promoting enmity and making inflammatory statements. Authorities stated that the swift action was necessary to prevent any potential escalation and to maintain public order.
Inspector General Amit Pathak of the Devipatan Range confirmed that the arrest followed the circulation of a video clip in which the cleric was allegedly heard making derogatory comments on a public platform. “During interrogation, the individual admitted to making the statement and issued an apology. Further legal proceedings are ongoing,” he said.
Controversial Speech and Viral Video
The case stems from a speech delivered on May 5, 2024, during a “social reform and educational awareness conference” in Bhagalpur, Bihar. According to police sources, Salim allegedly made derogatory remarks not only about the Chief Minister’s mother but also included statements perceived as offensive toward the Hindu community.
The video of the speech resurfaced recently and went viral, prompting outrage and leading to legal complaints in Uttar Pradesh.
Public Apology
Following his arrest, Salim issued a public apology, acknowledging his remarks and expressing regret.
“I admit my mistake. During the conference, some inappropriate and offensive words came out of my mouth which should not have been spoken. I fold my hands and sincerely apologise for my actions,” he said.
He further appealed for restraint in public discourse, adding, “No statement should be made that hurts any individual, religion or disturbs social harmony.” He also specifically sought forgiveness from the Chief Minister.

Officials have indicated that the investigation is still underway. Authorities are examining video evidence, digital records, and witness testimonies to establish the full context and intent behind the remarks. Police have reiterated that strict action will be taken in cases involving speeches or statements that could incite communal tensions.
